Offshore Industry
The offshore industry is one of the world’s most profitable, but also one of the most demanding and dangerous. Several major accidents on oil rigs have significantly tightened the conditions of safety training for workers as well as the conditions of the criteria for their fitness to work. In addition to the OPITO approved FOET, BOSIET, HUET trainings, new medical criteria have been introduced for some of the training processes, such as the PSTASS EBS standard. Although the structure of the basic examination is not complex, the doctors making the assessment are faced with a complicated clinical issue and a decision on which lives often depend. These assessments are carried out in accordance with the OEUK (Offshore Energies UK) standard and approved doctors have undergone training at approved oil industry centres. Some oil companies set much higher standards of screening for their employees and include them in their preventive protocols.

With an increasing number of people working on floating units that are part of the offshore industry, such as drillships, suppliers or cable layers, offshore workers on these units are also required to be fit to work under the STCW/MLC 2006 Convention.
Following a number of accidents involving transport helicopters, which have unfortunately resulted in fatalities, the CAA (UK Civil Aviation Authority) standard for shoulder measurement has been introduced.
The Chester Test is a test increasingly used in the oil industry to test the physical ability to withstand the stresses and strains of working on an oil platform or onshore oil field. It can be carried out in the majority of OEUK approved clinics.
