Seafarers are the backbone of global trade, but life at sea comes with unique risks and challenges. The Gard Crew Claims Report 2025 takes a close look at illnesses, injuries, and fatalities reported in 2024, offering insights into what these cases reveal about the wellbeing and safety of crew members worldwide.
The findings show that:
- Illness remains the biggest concern, making up almost 60% of crew claims. Heart problems, abdominal issues, and back pain were among the most common.
- Injuries accounted for 37% of claims, with fingers and backs most often affected, usually from slips, falls, or crush incidents.
- More than 90 crew deaths were reported, most linked to illness. Worryingly, suicides outnumbered fatal accidents, often occurring early in contracts and mostly among officers.
- Stress plays a major role, with 8 out of 10 common illnesses linked to or made worse by stress.
Behind every statistic is a seafarer and their family. That’s why this report goes beyond numbers to highlight the importance of mental health, rest, safe working practices, and strong onboard support systems.
Gard’s goal in sharing this report is not just to present the data, but to encourage conversations and practical actions that can make life at sea safer and healthier. We believe prevention is always better than cure – and that with the right focus on safety culture, wellbeing, and care, risks can be reduced.
