Seafarer Demographics Study 2024

The Maritime Charities Group (MCG) has commissioned a study of the estimated size and demographic profile of the UK’s Merchant Navy and fishing fleet personnel and their dependants, from 2019–2040. This research will cover UK nationals (aged 18+) who are working/former seafarers, their families, and service-providers working in maritime welfare charities. It will include all UK seafarers, except those covered by a separate project being conducted by Greenwich Hospital, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines (RNRM) Charity, and the RAF Benevolent Fund on the UK’s RAF, and RNRM populations.

The MCG will use this data to better understand the welfare needs, locations, challenges and changes facing seafarers and their dependants.

The study includes four surveys for:

  1. Working seafarers who are UK nationals
  2. Former seafarers who are UK nationals (including those who are retired or now working in a different profession)
  3. Partners/family members of seafarers (seafarer must be a UK national)
  4. Maritime charity service-providers in the UK.

All information that is collected in the surveys will be anonymous and confidential.
